Google unveils Caffeine search system

Internet giant Google has announced the completion of work on its new index system Caffeine.

The company said it will provide 50 per cent "fresher" search engine results for online content from news stories to forum posts. As web pages become increasingly diverse and complex, the group claims Caffeine will allow relevant content to be found faster than ever.

Software engineer Carrie Grimes explained that the new system analyses the web and updates the search index constantly, adding new pages as they are found. She added that information can now be found with the minimum of searching, regardless of when or where the content was first published.

"Whether it's a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before," Ms Grimes said.

According to Google, Caffeine – which adds hundreds of thousands of gigabytes of information every day – represents the most comprehensive collection of web content currently available. Furthermore, the company has pledged that further improvements will be implemented to the system in the coming months.

Firms stepping up online marketing

Many firms continued to increase their marketing efforts during 2009 despite the recession, new data has suggested.

According to recent findings from the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe (IAB), companies are allocating larger proportions of their budget to various marketing strategies.

The study revealed that online marketing continued to grow throughout last year, an area on which the economic downturn appeared to have little effect.

Alain Heureux, president and chief executive officer of IAB Europe, said: "We are at a crossroads for the online advertising market; we have a booming search market supporting traffic and sales and lead generation, and online display is ripe for further growth due in part to the success of video and social media."

He added that the development of new techniques and business models are providing the "perfect platform" for the next generation of online marketing.

The findings support the recent Econsultancy UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report, which also suggested growth in the sector would continue.

According to the data, some 60 per cent of companies intend to increase their spending on search marketing during the coming year.

[WTB] I need article writers and rewriters

As the title suggest, I am in need of good English,Spanish,German and French article writers and rewriters.

So whatever language you write in, you must be able to convey whatever is in the article properly and fluently in your own style.

We are going to sell stuff online with our articles and I except people to read atleast the first paragraph of each article. So apart from that each article must have 2 – 3% of the keywords i give you yet remain readable.

All the articles must definitely pass the uniqueness test.I don’t want it to pass copyscape but it should be atleast 80% unique

I am thinking about paying $1 per each 300 word article rewritten and the price can be adjusted according to the writers ability. I would defintely increase the pay as much as you like if you really hit the nail on its head with rewrites, but that is highly unlikely as I have found one such writer :(

Payment Via Paypal.I can pay weekly or fortnightly. But I cannot pay you in advance even if you are used to getting work done that way.

You agree that upon sending me the rewrites all rights to the rewritten articles transfer to me. This means you will not sell, reproduce or re-use these articles in any way.

Please type this in your Email Title or Comment to this article … “Freelance rewriters” so I know you read and understand the requirements. Here is a the email form to contact me

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you

Debate over online content charges

With internet pay walls for online content looming, many in the industry are still undecided if such a move is viable.

Free online content has become an accepted part of news delivery with the growth of the internet, but several established publications are looking at implementing charges.

The Times and Sunday Times will soon charge readers for access to its website, leading many industry figures to think others will follow suit.

Readers of The New York Times online edition have being paying to access some parts of the site for some time, as have those taking the Wall Street Journal over the internet.

The Financial Times in the UK operates a similar system, requiring users to pay beyond a limited amount of web content.

However, opinions differ as to how successful charging for online news will prove to be.

Tim Luckhurst, professor of journalism at the University of Kent and former editor of the Scotsman, believes the Times and Sunday Times will struggle to convince readers that they must pay for content which was previously free.

"Very few people expect it to work, but most people in the industry want it to work," he remarked.

Online news more popular than pornography

New research has shown that Britons now spend 2.8 per cent of their internet time reading news content, as opposed to 2.7 per cent viewing adult websites.

The research was carried out by United Kingdom Online Measurement Company (UKOM). It revealed that over the last three years the time spent by UK web users looking at explicit content online has fallen, but online news consumption has nearly doubled over the same period.

Alex Burmaster from UKOM believes that these figures shatter the myth that people mainly use the internet to view pornography. He said: “The prevalence of web adult usage has always been greatly overestimated. The reality is completely different.”

The research also revealed that, on average, British people spend the equivalent of one day per month online and that social networking sites are by far the most popular web activity, taking up 22.7 per cent of our online time. Emailing came in at number two, taking up 7.2 per cent of web time and gaming was in third place, using up 6.9 per cent of online time.

Online news is increasing in popularity, according to the figures, with 2.8 per cent of web time now spent on this activity, compared with 1.5 per cent three years ago.
